New Mesothelioma Treatment Options

admin

There is a lot of research being conducted in the field of mesothelioma treatment. Researches help in developing new treatment options or improving the existing traditional treatment options. There are also many mesothelioma clinical trials under way to find out new treatments for ensuring safety and efficiency. However, there is no 100% surety that a particular treatment option for mesothelioma is successful.

New Treatment Options for Mesothelioma

There are a number of new and alternative treatment options to treat malignant mesothelioma. Some of the latest mesothelioma treatment options are as follows:

  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a new mesothelioma treatment. It is based on the theory that certain frequency of light can be used to kill single celled organisms. This can be done by intravenous administration of certain photosensitive drugs which targets the diseased cell and eventually destroys it. This treatment can cause other side effects like skin sensitivity, nausea and vomiting.
  • Another new mesothelioma treatment option is immunotherapy or biological therapy where the immune system of body helps in treating the disease. Immunotherapy helps in improving the natural immune system of the body which helps in fighting the disease. If the immune system is faulty, then this therapy helps in repairing it and for this Biological response modifiers (BRMs) are used. Though these BRMs naturally occur in the body, it can now be developed artificially in laboratory and are as effective as the natural ones.
  • People suffering from mesothelioma are also opting for Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) which helps in controlling the spread of the cancer. In this radiation is given to the tumor without affecting the nearby normal cells. Rays of different frequencies are used along with computer generated images to plan and emit targeted radiation directly to diseased tissue.
  • Gene Therapy reaches the DNA level and helps in either correcting or removing the dangerous cancerous genes. This form of therapy includes replacement gene therapy and knockout gene therapy. While in replacement gene therapy the mutated or missing gene is replaced by normal genes, in the case of knockout gene therapy, the gene causing the tumor is completely removed.

There are many alternative mesothelioma treatments which are being used now like acupuncture, homeopathy, herbs, massages and many more. There are also combination of treatments being used like surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, called multimodality therapy. Apart from this, heated intra-operative intraperitoneal chemotherapy and use of pemetrexed drug like Alimta are also being used.

  2. Charles Shaw says:

I was recently diagnosed with mesothelioma and, obviously, I’ve been on an emotional roller coaster ever since. I read an article about a new study examining how mesothelioma affects a patient’s emotional state (http://www.mesotheliomanews.com/2011/05/24/memorial-sloan-kettering-cancer-center-is-recruiting-for-study-that-will-examine-the-psychosocial-needs-for-mesothelioma-patients/), but I’m wondering if there are any studies already completed that have made recommendations for standard emotional treatment. I’ve considered anti-depressants, but I’m worried about how they might interact with my chemo. I’ll check back for your reply.
    Thank you for your help.

Thanks for writing to us Charles, mesoblog wishes you speedy recovery.
I doubt if there’s a standard emotional treatment guidelines, it varies from patient to patient.
However make sure you get regular check-ups, visit mesothelioma centers near you & meet other people, their families & learn from their experience. Also take special care of your diet, do light exercise & try to keep your routine as normal as possible.
